When Kate had finally fallen asleep, she dreamed of Donnie and his kiss.
She hadn’t been asleep long when his kisses got more urgent and he was kissing her neck. Then he was pulling her gown up and her underwear down and he was inside her. Soon she was screaming his name.
It wasn’t until she woke up in Brian’s arms that she realized her dream was really Brian and that it wasn’t a dream. She snuggled closer to him to go back to sleep. She didn’t realize he was awake until he spoke to her.
“Who is Donnie?” His tone was flat and emotionless.
She looked up at him. “I told you about him. He’s that guy that’s been my best client. Why?”
“Are you fucking him? Is that why he’s your best client?” Kate was shocked. “I didn’t show you how to do all of this so you could fuck other guys.” At this point Kate got out of bed and moved away from him.
“Brian I swear I’ve never been with anyone but you.”
Brian got out of bed and was now standing in front of her, beautifully naked, but very angry. “You called his name this morning when I was making you scream!” he yelled.
Kate turned her back to him. “He took me out on a date last night. I let him kiss me. It was nice. I was dreaming about him kissing me. Then it seemed so real and it felt so good. How would I know that another man wouldn’t feel the same as you?”
“So if it had been him, you would have let him fuck you?” The look on her face broke him. He knew he had gone too far. He turned and sat back down on the bed. “I knew that eventually you were bound to meet someone that would change things between us. I just never expected to be jealous.”
Kate joined him in sitting on the bed. “Brian I don’t know what’s going on between me & Donnie. It’s been too long since I’ve spent time with anyone but you to know what I’m doing.”
Brian half smiled at her. “I’ve really fucked your life up a lot by keeping you to myself & insisting you keep to yourself as much as possible.”
Kate laughed. “Brian, I’ve always kept to myself. You just gave me a valid reason.” He looked up at her. “I think you fucked me a lot, but you didn’t ruin my life. It’s not like you’ve ever done anything I didn’t enjoy. A lot.” She stood up and moved in front of him. “I’m sorry I called you his name. Do you want to punish me?”
He took her hand and kissed it. Then he stood up & very gently kissed her. Gentle kisses weren’t normal from Brian.
“Not all men will ask you to do the things I’ve wanted you to do. Do what you like to do. Don’t let anyone convince you to do anything you aren’t comfortable with.”
She smirked. “I’m comfortable with a lot of things.” She leaned forward and lightly kissed him. When she moved closer and then straddled his legs putting her breasts in his face, instead of attacking her, he just rested his forehead on her chest. He could still smell her signature perfume that she always wore even though she hadn’t put it on since the day before. He put his hands on her waist and pushed gently so she’d lean back.
“Kate, I want you to be happy. Really I do. I just don’t know how to let go of what we have.”
Kate wasn’t sure how to handle Brian like this. So she did what he taught her. She seduced him. She did everything that she knew to do to please him over and over until he was too tired to think anymore and fell asleep. It was almost three in the afternoon and she needed a shower. She quietly got out of bed and couldn’t help staring at Brian for a minute. Even while he was asleep, she was drawn to him.
Brian heard a phone ringing. His instinct was to answer it and so he did. “Hello?” he said without looking at the phone.
“Who is this?” a voice asked.
Brian didn’t recognize the voice, but their accent made it clear that they were from Boston. He managed to wake up enough to look at the phone and saw that it showed the name as “Donnie.” Part of him wanted to say something that would scare Donnie away. The part of him that actually cared about Kate wouldn’t let him. “I’m a friend of Kate’s. I think we accidentally swapped phones this afternoon at a lunch meeting. She’s gonna kill me.”
“Well, what’s your number and I’ll call it and maybe get her,” he asked.
“She was going for a run. I’ll just head back down by her place and see if I can meet her and swap phones back. I’ll let her know you called.” Brian hung up and turned off the phone. He heard her in the shower. He immediately went to talk to her. She thought he was coming to join her.
“I guess you weren’t as tired out as I thought you were. Are you joining me?” she asked.
“I might have messed up something.”
“What’s wrong?” Kate knew that tone.
“I was asleep and heard a phone ringing. I thought it was mine.”
“Who was it?”
“It was him.”
“Shit.”
“I tried to cover saying that we must have gotten our phone’s mixed up at our lunch meeting. But then he wanted my number so he could call you. So I told him you had gone for a run. You still always leave your phone off when you run, right?”
“Yes.”
“So I told him I’d swing by here and wait for you to get home and trade phones. So you need to call him when you get back from this run.”
“Let me get finished up in here and I’ll call him back.”
Brian left the bathroom and got dressed. Kate needed some space. She needed to be able to explore whatever this was with whoever Donnie was. As much as it killed him to think of Kate with someone else, he knew he owed it to her. He heard her get out of the shower and dry her hair. He packed his bag while she dried her hair.
“What are you doing?” she asked as she came out of the bathroom in her robe.
He just stared at her for a minute. She had no idea how beautiful she really was, especially without any makeup. “You are so beautiful.” She blushed. He walked to her and gave her a hug. “Kate,” he started and pulled back from her just enough to look her in the eyes. “I need to stay away from you for a while. I don’t want to. Leighanne is really suspicious. You have someone in your life that wants to get to know you. Someone that you don’t have to lie about or keep secrets from. Do you want to get to know him better?” She started to answer. “If you do, if you like him, I can guarantee he’s not going to want to share you with me. Not like this. If I had the slightest right to object to you being with him, I would.” He let go of her and walked towards the door. “I don’t know how long I can force myself to stay away from you.” He took a deep breath. “Kate, I want you for myself, but I can’t have you. I can’t make you happy. I can’t treat you the way you deserve to be treated. You are a wonderful woman and you deserve so much better than what I can give you. Maybe Donnie’s the one who can give you what I can’t?” He started to open the door and she ran to him to hug him goodbye.
“I don’t know if I know how to be with someone else,” she said against his chest.
He tilted her chin up to look at him. “Just be honest with him. Tell him who you are. Tell him what you want. Tell him how he makes you feel. Don’t settle for anything less than the same thing from him.” He kissed her goodbye. “If he’s a total jerk and can’t see how amazing you really are, then come back to me.” Then he was gone.
Kate stood there by the door for a few minutes and watched him get into his rental car and drive off. She eventually went and pulled her sheets off her bed and put them in the washer. Then she just kind of crumbled there in the laundry room.
