Secrets & Lies part 17

The house was dark, but she could see that Donnie was sitting on the balcony smoking. She stood there silently watching him for almost half an hour. He wasn’t really doing that much smoking, so much as he lit one after the other and held it until there was nothing left. She could see a couple of empty bottles of whiskey sitting on the floor.

She knew he thought that she was in bed with Brian right now. And even if she opened the door to let him know she was here, he was going to think she had slept with Brian. All she wanted in the world was Donnie and for him to look at her with those sexy brown eyes. There wasn’t anything she wouldn’t do for him. She walked back to the kitchen and made some coffee for Donnie and ducked into the bathroom to change out of her wet clothes. She put on her robe and combed her hair before getting Donnie’s coffee and heading to join him on the balcony. He didn’t even seem to hear her open the door.

She sat his coffee down and took the other seat on the balcony and waited. He quit lighting more cigarettes, but he said nothing to her for at least 20 minutes.

“Did you sleep with him?” She was startled when she finally heard him speak.

“No, I didn’t sleep with him.”

“Don’t fucking lie to me Kate.” He still hadn’t looked at her.

“Donnie, I did NOT sleep with Brian or have sex with Brian.” She wasn’t looking at him now, but she could feel his eyes on her.

“What did you do with Brian all night then?” He voice was filled with anger.

Kate sighed. No matter what happened tonight with Donnie, she knew she didn’t love Brian. “We met and went to dinner. We talked and laughed. We kissed. He took me back to his hotel room to have sex.”

“And you didn’t have sex?” He snorted. “You crave sex. You expect me to believe you didn’t let him fuck you?”

She stood up and stepped in front of him. “What I expect is for you to believe that I love you and the only person I want to touch me is you. I don’t want him.” She headed back inside and got a shower before crawling into bed. Donnie was drunk. There was no use in arguing with him tonight.

Kate had been asleep for almost an hour when she heard Donnie in the shower. She was relieved that he was at least not still drinking and dozed back off. A little while later, she was awakened by Donnie pulling her out of bed and leading her to the kitchen. They sat at the table and gathered their thoughts. Kate was waiting for him to talk.

He looked at her for a while before he spoke. His voice was much calmer. “You say you don’t want Brian.” He paused and looked down. “What do you want Kate?”

“Oh Donnie. All I want in this world is you. Everything else is meaningless without you. I feel like myself when I’m with you. When I’m with you, I’m who I always wanted to be.” She moved to stand in front of him. He rested his forehead on her stomach.

“I just knew I had lost you. I just knew the only reason you came home was to tell me goodbye.”

“Donnie, can you forgive me?”

He pulled away from her and looked up at her in question. “Forgive you for what? You said you didn’t have sex with him.”

She took a deep breath. “But I did kiss him and I did go back to his hotel room with him. I almost cheated on you.”

“What stopped you?” She looked down at him.

“He doesn’t make me feel the way you make me feel with just a look. He thinks he loves me, but he doesn’t. He just wants me. He doesn’t even really know who I am. He loves who he thinks I am. I may have been that person at one time, but I’m not now. You know who I really am and you love me unconditionally. Now that I know what that’s like, there’s no way I’d want to go back to what I used to have.”

Donnie pulled her to him and into his lap and held her tight. “I do love you Kate. So much more than I can tell you or show you. I didn’t plan on loving you like this, but the more I spent time with you . . . it just happened.”

“Donnie, I love you too.” She laughed. “Would you be okay if I told you to shut up and kiss me?”

He smiled. “More than okay.” He gently kissed the woman he loved more than anything and was quickly consumed with the usual passion he felt for her. It took one movement of his hand to untie his robe and let it fall out of the way. Kate wasted no time in pulling her nightgown over her head and straddling Donnie in the kitchen chair. At one point he had laid her out on the kitchen table, but they ended up back in their bed for hours. Just as Kate was about to fall asleep in his arms, Donnie asked her a question. “When are we getting married?”

She raised her head off his chest and looked at him with a grin. “We could go to Vegas? Or Jersey? Can’t you get married quickly in New Jersey?”

“Hell if I know. We can check it out after we sleep. When do you want to do it, though?”

“Tomorrow. Let’s get married tomorrow.”

“That sounds perfect.” Donnie fell asleep with a smile on his face and the woman he loved in his arms.

When Donnie’s cell phone rang hours later, it was all he could do to figure out how to answer it. He hadn’t looked to see who was calling before answering but once he heard the voice on the other end, he got up and left the bedroom.

“What do you want?” He tried to keep his voice down.

“Is she there with you?”

“Of course she is,” Donnie said in an annoyed tone. “She’s trying to sleep.”

“She wasn’t supposed to choose you.”

“But she did. Surprised me too. But now you have to live up to your end of the bargain Brian. I let you try to rekindle what you had with her. She didn’t want you anymore. You tried. You failed. Now you keep your fucking distance from my wife.”

“Does she know that you gave me your blessing to try to seduce her?”

“No, she doesn’t need to know that. But I know now that she would never be unfaithful to me. Thanks for that.”

“She’s not your wife yet.”

“A matter of time.”

“She tasted the same way I remembered her tasting…”

“Bastard. Don’t ever touch her again!” He was yelling and ended his call with Brian as Kate walked in the room.

Donnie did his best to not look guilty. “What was that about?” She was still half asleep but had obviously heard the last part of his conversation.

Donnie thought over what she might have heard. “That was Brian calling trying to convince me that something happened with you and him.”

“Sounded kinda like he did convince you…” She walked over to him and wrapped her arms around him.

“He implied that he went down on you,” Donnie said matter-of-factly.

“He did not. What did he say exactly?”

“He commented on the way you taste.”

“He did touch me, but that was part of what made me realize I didn’t want to be there. He could have licked his fingers. That’s a trademark Brian move.”

Donnie was relieved. Somehow he just knew Kate wasn’t lying. He’d be damned if he ever let another man touch her again. Donnie just had to be sure she never found out that Brian had his permission to try to seduce her. Everyone had their own secrets and lies. This was going to be his.

  1. Ugh hit enter
Lead to another story or sequel. Though leaving it there makes the reader to wonder. Donnie is a sneaky one but I guess ant blame him in one respect but oh she would be pissed if she ever found out that she was manipulated.

    Wow. Good job!
