Marina quickly settled into the routine at the house. She had been given the choice of staying in the guest house or in the main house. She took a room upstairs near Lucas’ room.
Richard quickly realized why she needed to be nearby to Lucas. His blood sugar was all over the place. At times she checked it hourly. It was no less often than every 4 hours while Lucas was actively receiving treatments. Richard offered to check Lucas’ blood sugar sometimes so that Marina could get a whole night’s sleep. Marina did lots of teaching to Lucas and his brothers about his illness. Dr. Davis was impressed with her knowledge and skill level. Richard was impressed that she could make a teenaged boy do what he was supposed to do without arguments.
Lucas finished up his first round of treatment after a week. There would be 4 weeks between treatments. His body had to have time to recover from the first round before they did another treatment. There would be a total of 3 “rounds” of treatment and then a maintenance therapy for up to a year.
Marina would be caring for Lucas for at least 5 months. Those five months would include Thanksgiving and Christmas and tentatively end at the close of March. Chicago in the winter. A serious adjustment for Marina.
