Kim had actually sobered up enough by the time they got to their room to start protesting. “I can’t believe that you, of all people, brought some guy back to our room.”
“Leave me alone. Did you see his arm? It’s bleeding. I brought him here to clean it up.”
Keith hadn’t even really noticed his arm elbow bleeding until she said something. He looked and there was blood all over his sleeve. He almost fainted at the sight of all the blood. Jennifer pulled him into the bathroom with her. She quickly unbuttoned his shirt and took it off of him and tossed it into the tub. She took a wet washcloth and gently wiped his elbow clean. She then put some ointment on it. She left the room for a moment and came back with a bottle of something that she dabbed on her fingers. It was a clear liquid. She put it all around the edges of his injury. Within seconds, the pain was gone.
“Now to find you a shirt,” she said, pulling him out of the bathroom. “I don’t know of anything I have that will fit besides my nightshirt and you can’t have that.”
Kim was laughing at her. At them.
“What?” they both said.
“Jennifer, you’re leading a half dressed man around our hotel room telling him you can’t give him your nightshirt. And Keith, you just look awestruck.”
“Well, I am awestruck. First she tosses some drunk guy over her shoulder and saves us all, and now she’s playing doctor.” He paused to look at Jenn. “How did you learn to beat someone up like that?”
“I didn’t beat him up. It was self defense. I took a class last summer. As far as playing doctor, I know I want to go into the medical field, but not sure what as just yet.”
There was silence for a few minutes.
“So,” Jenn said, “Is there someone you can call to bring you a shirt or are you just going to run around town shirtless?”
“Yeah, I can call someone. I’ll never explain this one though.” Keith dialed a number on the phone and asked someone to come pick him up and to bring a t-shirt.
“Who’s coming?” Kim asked.
“My girlfriend, Sara. She’s gonna kill me.”
“Let me handle it, okay?” Jenn asked.
“Sure. You’ve handled everything else tonight. Might as well let you handle the worst of it.
Kim clicked on the TV and they all sat, pretty much in silence for about half an hour until there was a knock at the door. Jenn answered the door and Sara walked in, red t-shirt in her hands. She took in the room and threw the shirt at Keith and turned to leave. What was she supposed to think? Her boyfriend, alone, half naked with two girls in a hotel room?
“Keith, why don’t you go in the bathroom and get dressed. You could get your shirt out of the tub and try to rinse some of the blood out of it?”
Keith was silent, but obedient. It was then that Sara saw his elbow.
“What happened to his arm?” she asked when he was in the bathroom
“Well, he had seen us at the club he was singing at and apparently we all left around the same time. Some drunk followed us out and tried to jump us. Keith came to our rescue. The guy knocked him down and he cut his arm, but Keith kept after him until he agreed to leave us alone. He walked us back to our hotel room to be sure we made it here safe. I cleaned up his arm in the bathroom and he called you to come get him. He really didn’t do anything wrong.” ‘Except maybe flirt with me at the bar,’she thought. “Please don’t be mad at him for helping us out.”
Sara looked at her. She seemed to be telling the truth. She knew that Keith couldn’t stand to see a woman hurt or picked on. Keith was listening from the bathroom. He couldn’t believe it. There was enough of the truth in that story to make it believable. What was better about it was that Sara was buying it.
He came out of the bathroom and smiled a small sort of smile. Everyone looked pleasant. Sara even looked at his arm and felt a bit sorry for him. She took him by the hand and headed out the door. He was relieved. He caught Jenn’s hand signal, just as the door was closing, to call her. He’d definitely call her. She’d now saved him twice. He owed her big time.
Jenn got the third degree from Kim, yet again. No, she wasn’t interested in the Australian blonde god. She just didn’t want to have him in trouble for just being a klutz.
The next day, they were awakened by the phone ringing. It was Sara inviting the two of them to lunch with her and Keith. Jenn agreed.
It was the start of an incredible friendship. A friendship with Keith Urban. Neither of them ever told Sara what really happened that night. Kim was too drunk to really remember. Keith and Jenn were on the same team from that moment.
